I guess I’ve been Into V-dubs from birth (thanks Dad!) and eventually learnt to drive in the family Bug & Microbus from ’78 onwards.

First owned VW was a ’76 Scirocco in 1983, before the Bug really bit in 1985 with a ’74 1303S. Then I joined Lothians VW Club and got into the VW Club and event scene – and what a diverse scene it is! After a few Doune, Bug-In (BVF), Action & Stonor Park visits, I found myself at Santa Pod for the first time in 1987 as an event called Bug Jam kicked off. Sunshine, friends, beer, entertainments and a drag strip = VW Heaven!

Several years and many V-dubs later, an enthusiastic bunch of dubbers from various clubs in Scotland answered this calling and Volksfling was born. I guess my favourite was sunny ’96, when we even took the Water Bug down the strip at Crail, before its much wetter outing at Skye later that year. After an absence since ’98 without a suitable venue, we return to keep an established Scottish VW Show on the calendar. With or without racing, I’m delighted to still be involved. We hope the success of this Show helps us provide an even better one next year.

After 15 years living in Scotland with a Splitty Van, it’s inevitable you’re going to learn to weld at some point! So here’s to you if you’ve worked hard on your ‘Wagen to be here in it – it’s the spirit we all share, whether your V-dub actually made it this year or not. Buy, sell, swap, barter, join clubs, learn, teach and chew the fat with fellow enthusiasts, and don’t forget to chillout with a few beers to some crazy tunes!
